It has been estimated that 25–40% of adults have chronic or recurrent dyspeptic symptoms, accounting for 2–5% of all GP consultations in primary care (Baron et al. 2008). The economic burden of dyspepsia is considerable, with NHS costs in the region of £500m each year (Delaney et al, 2000). This article considers empirical evidence for the investigation of dyspeptic symptoms, with a particular focus on non-invasive testing for <i>Helicobacter pylori</i> (<i>H. pylori</i>).en_US
