The independent component analysis (ICA) is presented in this paper for the identification of diesel engine noise sources from the measured acoustic signals. The ICA has the capability of separating the latent engine noise sources from only the measured acoustic signals robustly. It helps to study the source characteristics in further details. First in this paper, a brief review in the analysis of diesel engine noise is given. The theory and properties of the ICA are discussed in the second part. The applications of the ICA with both the simulated and real data are presented next. The results indicate that the ICA is able to separate most known engine noise related sources from the measured acoustic signals.en_US
