The use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for the management of gastrointestinal symptoms is becoming increasingly popular across the world. Several herbal remedies have been claimed to improve the symptoms associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS); however, reliable scientific evidence on the effectiveness and safety issues associated with their use in the management of IBS symptoms is presently lacking. It is vital that gastrointestinal nurses are aware of the benefits and risks of the herbal remedies used by their patients, to ensure optimum management of the gastrointestinal conditions. Chamomile is one such herbal remedy that has been used for thousands of years to treat gastrointestinal ailments.en_US
