Ad hoc networks have various applications and characteristics, and are therefore categorized into sensor networks, mobile ad hoc networks, mobile sensor networks, and mesh networks in this paper. We investigate and analyze each category of ad hoc networks. The most important characteristics, challenges and open issues in each one are addressed and summarized. Applicable solutions to these issues are proposed and suggestions are made. The systematic analysis of ad hoc networks in this paper will allow the reader to better understand these networks so that one would be able to propose efficient and effective schemes to improve their performances.en_US
